Compliance and Financial Crime Salaries in India
Compliance pay in India is being pulled upward by two forces at once: regulatory expansion, which keeps adding obligations that need owners, and the fintech sector's discovery that a credible compliance leader is a licence-protecting asset worth paying for. The result is a market where the same nominal role, money laundering reporting officer, say, prices very differently by institution type and by how much personal regulatory exposure the seat carries. Ranges below are for corporate compliance and financial crime compliance seats; operations-side AML pay is covered separately on our KYC and AML operations page.

Compensation by level
| Level | Fixed pay (INR lakhs) |
|---|---|
| Manager / AVP | 14-26 |
| VP / Senior Manager | 26-50 |
| Director / Head of Compliance | 55-110 |
City: Mumbai and Delhi NCR hold the deepest senior compliance markets and price above other cities, since regulated-entity head offices concentrate the named-officer roles.
Movement: Roles carrying formal regulatory designation price above equivalent unnamed seats, and fintechs pay bank-plus for leaders who stay regulator-credible at fintech speed.
What moves these numbers
Two pricing dynamics stand out in our mandates. First, named-officer premium: roles carrying formal regulatory designation price above unnamed roles of equivalent internal seniority, and candidates increasingly ask about indemnification and governance support before compensation. Second, the fintech translation premium: compliance professionals who can operate at fintech speed without losing regulator credibility are scarce, and fintechs pay bank-plus for them because the alternative, hiring cheap and learning publicly, has become visibly expensive across the industry. Candidates from pure banking backgrounds do not automatically clear this bar, and the ones who do know their price.
Common questions
Why do fintechs pay more than banks for compliance?
Concentration of consequence. At a bank, compliance failure is damaging; at a licensed fintech it can be existential, and founders price the role accordingly once they have watched a peer learn this the hard way.
What does regulatory experience add to a profile?
Direct regulator-facing experience, inspections, responses, approvals, is the strongest single differentiator at senior levels, ahead of certifications and often ahead of institution brand.
Are financial crime and compliance the same pay market?
Overlapping but not identical. Financial crime compliance has its own escalating demand curve, and at the advisory and leadership end it currently prices at or above general compliance for equivalent levels.
Where these numbers come from
These ranges are our read of the current market for movers, people changing organisations, which typically prices above incumbent pay for the same seat. They are compiled from current public compensation data across Indian financial services and fintech and cross-checked against our own search work. Figures are annual fixed compensation in INR lakhs. Bonus and long-term incentives vary too much across institutions to compress into a range, and we would rather show you less data than false precision. Ranges update as the market moves, not on a publishing calendar; the date at the top of each page is real.
