Data Scientist Salaries in Financial Services, India
Data science compensation in financial services has bifurcated. Model-building roles in credit and fraud, once the premium end of this market, have matured into well-mapped bands. The premium has migrated to profiles who can take models to production and to anyone credibly working on the applied AI side, where financial services now competes directly with technology firms and loses often enough to keep raising. The ranges below reflect that split; treat the top of each band as the applied AI and ML engineering end.

Compensation by level
| Level | Fixed pay (INR lakhs) |
|---|---|
| Data Scientist | 14-26 |
| Senior Data Scientist / Lead | 26-45 |
| Head of Data Science / Analytics | 45-90 |
City: Mumbai and Bengaluru weight the pool, and the larger banking GCCs now pay at or above domestic institutions for equivalent senior seats.
Movement: Production and deployment experience prices well above research-only profiles, and credit-risk modelling backgrounds counteroffer successfully.
What moves these numbers
Two dynamics worth knowing before you open a role. First, credit risk modelling backgrounds transfer across banks and NBFCs cleanly, so notice-period counteroffers are common and often successful; win these candidates on problem quality and data access, which is the thing services and consulting backgrounds are usually escaping. Second, GCCs have entered this market at scale and pay at or above domestic institutions for equivalent seats, which has compressed the old assumption that captives were the value end of the market. If your bands were set more than a year ago, they are probably stale.
Common questions
Do GCCs pay data scientists less than fintechs?
Not reliably anymore. The larger banking GCCs now pay at parity with well-funded fintechs for senior individual contributors, and ahead of many domestic institutions. The differentiator has shifted to the work itself and the path to leadership.
What background gets the highest offers?
Production experience beats research polish. Candidates who have owned a model through deployment, monitoring and a regulator or validation review price above candidates with stronger academic profiles but notebook-only experience.
Is a PhD worth a premium in this market?
Only in narrow seats, mostly research-adjacent roles at a handful of institutions. For the majority of financial services data science hiring, it changes the conversation less than three years of production ownership does.
Where these numbers come from
These ranges are our read of the current market for movers, people changing organisations, which typically prices above incumbent pay for the same seat. They are compiled from current public compensation data across Indian financial services and fintech and cross-checked against our own search work. Figures are annual fixed compensation in INR lakhs. Bonus and long-term incentives vary too much across institutions to compress into a range, and we would rather show you less data than false precision. Ranges update as the market moves, not on a publishing calendar; the date at the top of each page is real.
