Data scientist pay in finance
Current compensation ranges for data science roles in financial services, drawn from live mandate data.
See the benchmarksSpecialist hiring for data scientists, machine learning engineers and analytics leaders across banks, NBFCs, fintechs and financial services GCCs in India. Screened for domain and regulated-decision judgment, not strong generalists who learn the sector on your portfolio. Success-fee, paid only on joining.
Brief us on a data science roleA data scientist in a lending business is not solving a generic prediction problem. They are working inside portfolio structures, a regulatory reporting cadence, and a decision that affects whether a real customer gets credit and whether the book stays within appetite. The maths is shared with every other industry; the judgment is not. Someone who has only built models for marketing or recommendation can produce something that scores beautifully offline and is quietly wrong for a risk decision, because they have not had to care about explainability, model governance, or the way a metric drifts once it meets a live portfolio.
This is why hiring on the toolkit misleads. Python, the usual libraries and a strong academic background look identical across candidates. What separates them is whether they have modelled inside a regulated financial decision and understood the constraints that come with it. A generalist can learn that, but in a lending or risk team they learn it on your portfolio and your reporting cycle, and the cost of the learning curve is not only slower delivery.
We work in financial services, so we screen on applied judgment in context. Before a profile reaches you, someone who understands the difference between credit-risk analytics and marketing analytics has formed a view on whether this person has actually worked where you need them to.
Problems modelled under real constraints. We ask what a candidate has built that fed a regulated or financial decision, not just what accuracy they reached on a benchmark.
Model governance and explainability. In a regulated setting a model has to be defensible, not only performant. We assess whether a candidate has worked where that mattered.
Portfolio and reporting fluency. We look for people who understand how a model behaves across a cohort over time, not only at the point of training.
Production reality. A model that never ships is a slide. We probe for how a candidate has worked with data and platform engineering to get models into a live decision.
Data science compensation moves with domain depth, seniority and whether the work feeds a regulated decision. We publish current ranges so an offer can be built on live numbers rather than a generic tech survey.

Because the context is the job. A data scientist who has worked inside lending or credit risk understands portfolio structures, regulatory reporting cadence, and why a model that is good for marketing is wrong for a risk decision. A strong generalist can learn this, but they learn it on your time and your portfolio, and in a regulated setting the cost of that learning curve is not only slower delivery.
Data scientists and senior data scientists, machine learning engineers, risk and credit modelling specialists, fraud and transaction-monitoring analytics, and analytics leadership, across banks, NBFCs, fintechs and financial services GCCs. We also place the data engineering that these teams depend on.
We look at the problems a candidate has actually modelled and the constraints they worked under: whether their models fed a regulated decision, how they handled model governance and explainability, and whether they understand the difference between a metric that looks good offline and one that holds in a live portfolio. Strong maths is a floor; applied judgment in a regulated context is the screen.
Yes. Data science and data engineering are different disciplines, and we run them as such. We have placed data engineering into a lending NBFC, and we regularly build teams that pair modelling talent with the engineering that gets models into production. See the case study for an example.
Success-fee, payable when a candidate joins. No retainer, and no fee for shortlist or assessment work that does not result in a placement. Fees are agreed before a mandate starts and reflect seniority and search difficulty.
